Thai Dancers at the Thai Food Festival, Battersea Park, London, 28/07/02.
This dance is called the RABUM TALIKIPAS ระบำ ตะลีกีปัส or fan dance, and is widely performed throughout the Muslim communities in Southern Thailand [and Malaysia] especially in [Thailand's] Patani province near the Malaysian border. The dance is usually performed during festivals or traditional celebrations. The music is a type of folk music influenced by Malay music and unique to southern Thailand [and Malaysia]. Dancers are dressed in sarongs commonly worn by women in southern Thailand and dance with colorful feather fans.

  • Nice video!I love thai food! Thanks for sharing!

  • i agree with u sigap86

  • Actually, the Muslim Malays in southern Thailand are not from Malaysia. The fact is that they are the REAL natives of southern Thailand itself. They once built the powerful Kingdom of Langkasuka which is located in Pattani province about more than 1500 years ago.

Later on, the Thai-Buddhist came from south China and conquer all the Malay kingdoms in southern Thailand, such as Sultanate of Patani, Kingdom of Ligor and many others...

  • the Malays built Langkasuka civilization there about 1000 years ago.

"taleegeepat" is a corrupted Malay words of "tari kipas" by Siam colonialists. tari = dance, kipas = fan.

the song been using in this video is called "Inang Tiong Hua"...Inang = old female palace servant, Tiong Hua = Chinese. "Inang" music is a Malay traditional music mixed/influenced with Chinese elements developed in a palace of Malacca kingdom in the time of Admiral Cheng Ho visits 600 yrs ago.

  • hi, lovely dance!

does anyone know where these dacers are from? are they UK based? were looking for some traditional Thai acts to perform at a big event in the UK in march this year, and would love some more info about these dancers! thanks.

  • you made a good point. :-) plus, the world would be at much more peace that way.

  • Totally agree with you,if 90 percents of SE people stop thinking who's here first?who own this, own that? just think about future who to progress what to benefit our region. We'll be superior as we already have similar background.

  • when muslim malays from malaysia came to southern thailand, they brought with them this dance, their muslim religion and other cultural aspects. they intermarried with the local thai population and obviously had children (which adopted the muslim religion). the name of this dance originally is tari kipas, but because they are in thailand, the name assimilated into the thai language and became taleegeepat. so the people who perform this dance are actually people of malay and mostly thai descent.

  • You post comment that "taleegeepat" is dancing from Malaysian and this dance is from Malaysia. You just tell other people. If you think thiss dance is Malaysian Why I and other people in the world don´t know and why you don´t show this dance in another country and tell that this is your dance.
