The renowned baritone Nelson Eddy (1901-1967) began his singing career on the stage, in numerous roles in grand opera and operetta. By 1935, Hollywood has discovered him and cast him opposite Jeanette MacDonald in an adaptation of Victor Herbert's Naughty Marietta. Their on-screen partnership became legendary, and their eight films together successfully revived interest in the genre of American operettas defined by Herbert in the early 1900s and carried on with great popularity into the 1920s by composers like Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg.
Romberg's The Desert Song premiered on Broadway in 1926 and was made into an early sound film in 1929. This television production from the acclaimed series "Max Liebman Presents" was built around the talents of Nelson Eddy and his post-MacDonald singing partner, the charming and silver-voiced soprano Gale Sherwood. Telecast live on May 7, 1955, it carries the distinction of being the only document of Eddy in a live performance of a complete musical.

  • It was a "magic world" then and Nelson Eddy weaves a spell which you dont see or hear in today's world of cheap values and instant stardom...thank you for posting.

  • This is a live TV production (1955), the only record of a complete live performance starring Nelson Eddy. Proves he sang just as beautifully live as on the pre-recorded soundtracks in his films.

  • Wish this production was done earlier in his career.

  • Poor Nelson, lumbered with that absurd outfit

  • What a wonderful voice, I just love this man, never will there be a voice like this again. What you hear today is rubbish. To sing like this live is just amazing. He must never be forgotten.

  • Just purchased and viewed the DVD of the full length production and I was really blown way. very entertaining, I did not expect such a quality production from a TV version, but they really did a great job and of course Nelson was magnificent as always.

  • I meant of course, what a wonderful voice that handsome man had.

  • Fantastic....what a wonderful voice that handsome had.

  • Thanks for this posting. I would love to see Nelson sing, from this same production, the title song, The Desert Song, which is probably my favorite rendition of this that he sang.

  • I think, if I am lucky enough to go upwards when I die, after my family, the persons I would like most to talk with are Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. This video clearly demonstrates that Eddy was the most trained and finest voice in the last century. Thanks for downloading it.

  • thanks beautifull ...mi vocabulario en inglés es muy limitado
