This trail is located in Calistoga, California. It is an old mining road that was used over and over by many wagons. In fact, it was used so much that the basalt flow has grooves carved up to 6" deep in some places by the steel wrap around the wagon wheels. The trail starts on the east side of Calistoga, and climbs up to the Palisades, or the rock cliffs visible in the background of the climb. The lower section of the climb is just steep, but not that bad. There are a couple of technical sections, but ridable. The upper section of the climb is all on basalt lava flow. There is no dirt. This section is very technical. This is the only video where I show the climb. It is quite the challenge. Once on top, you continue over the other side on an old jeep road that has mostly turned into a singletrack and basalt slabs. Then at the end you turn around and head back. The bike in the video is a Yeti 575, and the camera bike is a Cannondale Rize or RZ. For the free GPS topo trail map with turn by directions, go to http://www.greatbasinbicycles.com

  • How I spent my 51st bday yesterday! It was hike a bike up, but did 1/4 of the super rocky section decending. My guy friends did much more. I recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge and views. Unfortunately we were socked in with fog so that means we are returning this spring to enjoy again. Yes there was snow at the top. Watch for hikers at the lower levels. Don't forget the "Thank you bike" at the bottom!

  • damn i didnt know great basin bike came to the coast range. awesome vid, great music

  • that looks fun..

  • how do you like that 575 for uphill and cross country riding?

  • Excellent job capturing the feel of this trail! It's one of my favorites because it's beautiful, little used and makes you think; you often have a choice of lines, one being scary-rocky and the other scary-slidey (loose rock). Nice music, but the soundtrack in my head (esp. descending) was more like "Psycho" or "Aliens"!

  • That brought back a lot of childhood memories. We use to spend half the day getting our bikes to the top of the hill. There use to be peices of old wagons down in the canyon below. We'd ride down as fast as we could occasionaly avoiding the grill of an oncoming 4X4. Then we'd stop at the old fruit stand at the bottom (it had a tree growing through the roof) to get a cold drink. Those were some good times growing up in Calistoga.

  • awesome! keep up the good work, glad to see the 575 back in the spotlight.
