IMPOSSIBLE FAST ZTAR!
Les Fradkin, the virtuoso of MIDI Guitar, presents "Warp Drive" from his "One Link Between Them" CD featuring his revolutionary new instrument- The Starr Labs Ztar!

Robert Fripp once remarked in Guitar Player Magazine: "There is a new music to go with this new instrument. Therein lies my interest in the guitar synthesizer. That something entirely new will appear." This COULD be it! Come have a look and listen to the MIDI Guitar sound of the future.

This album has received wide acclaim in publications such as Keyboard Magazine and across the Internet.

Les, who is classically trained, is moving at Hyper speed. In this video, he's playing the Starr Labs Ztar MIDI Guitar in a Jean Michel Jarre meets Yngwie Malmsteen, Bach and Vivaldi influenced style on his own composition.

The Ztar can be strummed with string triggers or tapped with one or both hands as seen in this video.

Background sounds are being triggered from Ableton Live using clip launches and "follow actions".

The main lead sound is the Arturia Moog Modular V and the Logic ES2. Background sounds are from Reason 4, GForce M-Tron, Roland XV-5080 and Arturia Soft Synths. The sounds at the intro are made with Propellerhead Reason.

  • Mr. Fradkin, you are the best player of MIDI guitars! Kind regards from Russia. Do you plan to use one of this MesaDigital Kitara?

  • @ramziel315 Thanks for your kind compliment.

  • Dude this is killer! your crazy good with this thing! I want to get into playing one of these for a band with my friends, and ive done some search on Starr labs website, I was wondering if the Z6 s comes with a synth card, or would one have to order it additionaly? Also i was wondering if your new to the ztar and synth, is it hard to learn how to program it to make your own synth sounds, do you need alot of knowledge about music to be able to program it, or is it learnable? Thanks man ^_^

  • @Wafflestomp69 Thanks so much for your generous comment.

Although you can get a synth card, you're better off using either a hardware synth or a laptop with soft synths. More flexible and the sound will be better....

Even a newbie can learn to program the Ztar. You must read the manual carefully and fully. And a knowledge of the MIDI spec will help. And it IS learnable. But it will take some determination. With that said, I think you'll be OK. Good luck with it!

  • for someone that would be a beginner to a ZTAR would you suggest the ZTar Z7S? if I were to get one I would probably just use for a setup,a korg microkorg, alesis micron and 2 korg electribes,I'm mainly a guitarist that plays Thrash Metal, but the Ztar would help to create a Techno and Thrash Metal Hybrid :)

  • @ekalb2185 A Ztar Z7s would be fine, even in a beginner situation with your setup. Your "hybrid" would be up to your creativity with MIDI setups and settings

  • Holy Shit, My brain hole was just made a little Stronger by the Ztar of Power

  • Are Ztars available in the UK? And how do you power and get a sound out of them?

  • @RCTESTPILOT1

Actually, I'd recommend the Z7s, Z5 or the Baby Ztar if you're a beginner. While the Z6sp is comprehensive, it may be too complicated to get one's head around if you're just starting out. That said, you could always grow into it. But it's expense makes it a real challenge to stick with. Good luck!

  • As I've said before, the "acoustic guitar" on the studio recording of "Warp Drive" was played from a Fender Stratocaster with a Roland GK-2a pickup thru a Roland VG8EX V-Guitar Processor. All other parts were triggered by the Starr Labs Ztar. The acoustic on this video is triggered as an Ableton Live Clip.
