the name comes from the concept of "deep ecology." he says in the intro that older ecological schools of thought were basically just another set of smokestack filters or pollution laws. we needed a deep ecology to look at the deeper lifestyle choices we make that cause our problems, as opposed to the next improvement on cleanup measures. a deep economy should do the same: look at the deep seeded beliefs that make the economy what it is, and change them to find ourselves with an economy that does more for people and the world

i read an article by bill mckibben in the national geographic a couple years ago and it blew my mind. or ripped it right open. it's dope, you gotta read it too.
