For families living along the Cauvery River on the outskirts of Trichy, India, the seasonal flow of water is directly tied to their livelihood. In the spring time the river subsides and women can be seen bathing and washing both their family and for-hire laundry.
This afternoon hundreds of women were washing and hang drying laundry. There isn't much concern for knowing the up and downstream quality or cleanliness of the river - it is there for those who wish to use it.
When we look to solve the water crisis we start with the understanding that safe water is used for more than drinking alone. You need it for cooking and cleaning as well. And while we're addressing the safe water issue we also know that without hygiene education and improved sanitation solutions programming will never have a long-term positive impact.
