Students light teacher on Fire: Mr. Durdel Arcola High School Burning Man 2008

Mr. Durdel presents Burning man 2008 at Arcola High School. I threw a little review between burns. This is a variation of the methane mamba demo that I did at first by accident, but it turned out pretty good, so I make it an annual tradition right before Fall exams (the week before Christmas break). This year I let my seniors take part in the holding of the flame, which are methane gas (CH4)-infused bubbles. For a review, I asked exam questions before the student was able to light the bubbles aflame.

I also threw in a thermite reaction demo. This is a very dangerous demo, but a spectacular one.

Notice all of the safety precautions that were taken during this demo. Fire blankets, fire extinguishers, and several buckets of water.

All the students had a great time during this year's burning man and I can't wait until next year.

When the bubbles pop, they release the water contained by surface tension. The water falls on my hands and protects my skin from the fire. My hands are bald for a few months though... SCIENCE!

its methane bubbles which our chemestry teacher does often but burnt himself and in the process set the ceiling tilies on fire

In year 8 we filled up balloons with pure hydrogen and detonated them with a candle on a very long stick ;) we made the projector board fall off the wall, ah good times... It was insane hehe
