This is a sample from our NEW Level 1 course which is due to be released later this year.

Your chinrest can make or break you. Many people never pay any attention to what type of chinrest is on their violin, or worse yet, they may even choose one based on looks alone! Pain is a common problem with violinists, and many just go with the saying "No pain no gain!" But you should never have to play through pain. If you are experiencing pain then something is wrong and you need to stop and try to figure out what is causing it.

The chinrest is one of the most common causes of pain. To find out if yours could be causing problems, try removing the chinrest and playing without it for a few days. Take notice of where your chin naturally rests on the violin. And be aware of any changes in your posture and how you feel.

After spending some time without the chinrest, try to find a chinrest that will help you stay as close to your natural violin hold as possible. There are MANY different chinrests available on the market, so find one that fits you the best. They make chinrests that fit in the center of the violin, and chinrests that fit off to the side, they also make low chinrests and high chinrests. So take the time and find one that fits you and keeps you comfortable while playing.
