The first man received 5 talents (sower,tares,mustard,yeast,treasure) he gained 5 more (talents,ten virgins,wedding banquet,tenants,two sons). The second man received 2 talents (merchant,net) and gained 2 more (unmerciful servant,vineyard) The third man received 1 talent which he hid in Mathew 13:52, you might have to read that a hundred times before you see what "the kingdom of heaven is like". They were each given 1000 tons of power to stand up for others.
She used hers to stand up for EVERYONE but herself.
He used his to stand up for NOBODY but himself.
He used up all his power trying to stand up for himself, but he failed, so he tried to get her to use all her power to stand up for him.
She tried her best, but she failed to defend him from himself.
So he attacked her, until she was nearly destroyed.
So she stood up for her children by standing up for their mother.
Her talents grew.

The Parable of the Talents is one of the stories Jesus told to teach a moral lesson. Although the word talents in the story refers literally to money, you can obviously extend the meaning to other areas. Its interesting to read it using the common definition of talents.
