Despite his youth I Made Karyana is a very respected artist from Padangtegal, a district in the heart of Ubud. Made is a dancer since ever. From his very early years he has devoted his entire life to Bali culture and arts. Nowadays he dances both at the community temple ceremonies and on the stage. Made Karyana has been to India teaching traditional Balinese dances. He often goes abroad to perform either to Western or Asian countries. Besides being a great dancer he is also an imaginative choreographer. When he was younger was a Baris specialist. Now he specialises in Topeng dance. While dancing Topeng the dancer wears a mask. In his spare time Made Karyana carves the masks he uses for dancing. He has already a nice collection. My first time to meet Made was many years ago. He was no more than 16 years old. I remember going with him to Denpasar for teaching Balinese traditional dance to kids. I was seating on the back of his gorgeus Tiger Honda bike. In this video we see Made Karyana teaching in his family house, located in Padangtegal. For the first 5 minutes the video shows Made instructing two young boys. The youngest one is I Putu Prayudi, 5 years old. The other one is I Adi Uparanah. Adi is 7 years old. Both kids come from Bentuyung, a village about six km north of Ubud. When I shooted them, they were in their second lesson of Baris dance. Probably Baris (dance of the Warrior) is the most popular dance in Bali island. Every single Balinese male some day have danced Baris for sure. From minute 05:06 the video shows I Kadek Ana and I Wayan Jimy, both from Kutuh Kaja, taking their first lesson of Barong Macan (Tiger Barong) dance. Barong is a sacred creature in the Balinese mythology. He is the king of the spirits. Each Barong for each region is modeled after a different animal. There is a boar, a tiger, a dragon (or serpent) and the traditional lion. Both friends were learning Barong Macan dance because after one week they had to perform the dance in the temple of their village, Pura Penataran. At Butayadnya ceremony, to honour Butakala through the ritual of "caru". /------/
L'havia acompanyat a Denpasar.
