  • Grandissima lettura. La lentezza ne accentua il lato drammatico ed enigmatico..SOlo Celibidache riesce a far maglio..

  • Bernstein was asked why if he loved performing Bruckner so much, did he never record the complete cycle of symphonies. His response was that he didn't feel that he could better the interpretation of Herbert Von Karajan. A strange answer from a man who was always keen to put his own mark on everything he did. Are we to draw the parallel that he only recorded the Mahler cycle because he didn't rate anyone else's attempt?

  • The more I listen to this, the more I love it. Bernstein has a way of bringing out the energy and life of the music, and even at the slower tempo, this loses absolute nothing of its power -- if anything, it emphasizes it.

  • @ TheGerman6th

Yes, this is Vienna. Der Goldene Saal in Musikverein.

  • Is this Vienna?

  • Just listen to that amazing woodwind playing @ 1:15 on!!..Now this is the first performance I've heard that this is so clear!!

  • I wouldn't want to be without Karajan or Jochum or Wand in this music -- but Bernstein's tempo lets you luxuriate in Bruckner's fantastic orchestration, as well as giving an incredible sense of pulse and life to the music. Life and energy doesn't have to be sprinting everywhere all the time, you know. This is a deeply vivacious performance.

  • @Mozart61 I agree -- in fact, I love this performance. It's overwhelmingly suspenseful and powerful.

  • Bernstein always two slow in his late performing , not only Bruckner, Ex. the Beethoven 9th 1989. Karajan & Jochum is good , also Wand or Haitink, but I prefer

3 interpretation are the best of Bruckner 9th; those by Furtwangler,Mravinsky & Takashi Asahina.
