Charlie Chaplin slideshow: the first photo is when he was seven years old. Then there is one taken every seven years (usually) after that. He lived to be 88, despite all those pratfalls. I made the video 88 seconds long.

It kind of looks like a magic lantern show (one precursor to the invention of movies).

"7up" refers to movies made of interviews of a number of British people since they were seven (1964), and once every seven years since then. "49up" was the most recent one. Actually, Chaplin was British, too.

  • I don't think it's sad (was it meant to be???)

because he got really old, never lost his smile and will live forever as a legend :-)

  • No, it wasn't meant to be sad. I've been watching the Up movies as they came out every seven years since the participants were 28. They are now about 49 and the interviewer is getting old. I wanted to break my suspense about what seven-year increments look like over time. Some few people in history have been photographed enough to find out.

  • thats left me emotional and quite numb. how fitting to have a clock ticking in the background. he was fantastic. you must do more of these

  • Thanks for the compliment -- I was surprised myself at the final effect. I am working on a female version, England's Elizabeth the First (the former "Queen Mum"). It was surprisingly hard to find a woman who'd been photographed all her life.

  • Okay, that is posted now. YouTube won't let me put the url in the comments, so click my user and find it.

  • The Queen Mum 7up video is at YTN0C38hWsY

  • I felt that I had honestly fallen in love with him while watching "Limelight." He always seemed ageless, didn't he? He had the most unusual qualities about him, but his playfulness--his joie de vivre--really defined him for the ages!

  • Charlie Chaplin was quite a handsome young man in his younger years and even into his fifties. He looks gentlemanly and distinguished looking. That probably did not come out right but was not sure of the words to say. At least, that is my opinion.
