Recording Period:
September 1976 - February 1977 (mixed in May 1977)

Initial Release Date:
September 1977 ("Hope" album)

Remarks:
On July 6, 1976 a demo version of this track was recorded at Toronto Sound Studios during the group's rehearsals of new material for the "Hope" album. The basic tracks of this demo recording consisted of two separate takes of Dee playing grand piano.

In September 1976 production on the master version of this track commenced with producer Terry Brown engineering. After recording several takes of new piano it was decided that the piano performance on the previously recorded demo was in fact better and consequently the "demo" piano was transferred onto the new master recording.

The "space choir" heard at the beginning of this track was created using a separate piece of 24-track tape. Each of several different vocal parts was recorded individually onto separate tracks, and in some cases enhanced with various echoes and delays. The resulting multitude of voices was then mixed down to stereo and transferred ("flown in wild") onto two tracks of the 24-track master recording.

The Rickenbacker 4001 bass was patched directly into a "Neve" console. To achieve the "fuzz tone" effect, producer Terry Brown boosted the console's input gain control to above-normal level thereby adding distortion to the incoming signal.

  • How this album never became a movie based on it's concept, I'll never understand. It could have been as epic as Tommy or Brick in the Wall.

  • Funny, how some of us came in contact with this song at an early age...

And remembering the music exact as it was, no catching up ( Sometimes perception of things are different at an early age )with how you you receive things as an adult.

Therefore it had to remain in our minds for many years to come...

  • I was fortunate to see their (?) farewell concert at McMaster University, at a time when my wandering around at the front of the stage with my 35mm SLR caused no-one any grief - still treasure the many (surviving) pics.

  • for me, this sounds more like E.L.O. than Beatles... anyway, it´s an awesome one¡¡¡

  • One more thing, I saw the band on one of those 70s TV rock shows (like Don Kirshner's Rock Concert or something like that) and I believe they popped up on one or more of the morning or afternoon talk shows (might have been Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas . . .). I wonder if anyone has some of this old TV footage? If I recall, it was Klaatu's "Calling Occupants" which would have landed them on the tube. The Beatles comparison pressured them into showing up on TV to dispel this myth.

  • Thanks for posting these Klaatu soundscapes ReStartMusic. I've loved this band from the very moment they debuted in the 70s. Yeah, I fell for that Beatles comparison in the 70s too but after a couple of listens, especially to their first album, it was clear they were influenced by the Fab 4 but were not actually the same guys. Hope is without a doubt their masterpiece and I never tire of listening to it & appreciating all the musical depth and imaginative lyrics.

  • The competition in the markets that could support these bands at the time, had many of them touring Europe (Rush and Saga, for example) Upon their returns to the accolades of hometown southern Ontario and the availability of resources to get these bands more than a concert gig.... was rare. Music videos were just beginning, music television was in it's infancy. Maybe it's time for someone to take on that project in this millenium, and show us the story. I saw Klaatu, they were amazing. Lucky me!

  • My favorite song by Klaatu.
