I've always been attracted to aviaries since I was a kid and I've finally been able to make one. It makes a great addition to our home as it is very relaxing to just sit from a distance and watch these little birds fly about.
Currently, we have societies, orange cheek waxbills, shafttails, and an indian silverbill who all get along fine.
I wanted to put a waterfall in there but cleaning it would be a pain since the birds love to bathe in their water.
I designed this so I wouldn't have to disturb the birds too often so I use either aspen, cedar, or pine shavings on the floor. I leave a thick pile of it, rake it every other day and then clean it out completely every few months. The food in the wild bird feeder lasts for weeks so the only chores I have to do are to replace the water and give them their veggies, worms, etc.

  • What a beautiful habitat for your birds. Do you find that the mural gets pooped on constantly by the birds? Does it require cleaning? Also, the doors look rather large; do you worry about the birds escaping while you are cleaning or changing food/water? Thanks a lot!

  • @ArmandoQ16 Hey thanks. Sadly, I had to sell this when we moved out of our house. I use thick wood shavings for the flooring and use a wildbird feeder so I only replace food and clean the bottom once a month. The mural and plexiglas don't really get pooped on that much so I only wipe them clean every once in a while. The water gets changed everyday though. When I get inside the birds just fly off to the perches on the other side. I usually use the bottom door to clean out the aviary.

  • @subersibo considering how easily birds get sick, I think I'd clean it far more often than once a month..

  • @TheScaletIbisNW I never had any heath problems with my birds while I had the habitat but I agree, cleaning more often would probably be better.

  • the aviary is ok ...but the door is to big...

  • @Mykman512 Yes I agree but if I made the doors any smaller it would be difficult to clean the inside. Anyway, the door at the bottom is what I used to clean the thing most of the time.

  • Just some advice-

I don't recommend having strawberry finches. They're very aggressive.

Oh yeah.. I have a video of my finches on my channel!!!

  • What song is that?

  • I think that you are very very clever and i think that is a stunning aviary to look at and if i was a finch i would love that to be my home :-)

  • @si2008nz Only when they are first introduced into the habitat but the plexiglass is the very thin, flexible kind.

They are quick to know where the boundary is.

  • GEORGIOUS! Good job =D
