The Seljuk Turk victory over the Byzantines at Manzikert in 1071 effectively ended Greek rule of the Anatolian heartland. The Turks brought their dead to nearby Ahlat, at the west side of Lake Van. For many centuries thereafter, Ahlat was a distinguished burial ground for Turks, as the acres of old gravestones bear witness.
