Deciding to use performance and poetry as activism against homophobia, classism, sexism and ideals of gender is one thing. Reaching the generation that can really make a difference in these different forms of oppression is another. So what is a upstart writer/film maker/performer to do? Answer: embark on a 9 month long journey to create a literary/performance mix tape melting performance, hip-hop, literature, and pop culture. Signed to author Tim'm West's Red Dirt Publishing, S. Velvet Noose is embarking on an extraordinary journey as he prepares to release his debut book in 2012.
For the past few months, S. Velvet Noose has been recording a spoken word mix tape, titled 'I'm A Nobody--Too', compiled of his very own original spoken word. Noose strongly believes that by blending his pro-homosexual messages and hip-hop and pop culture, he can do his part in lending to the deconstruction of homophobia in the Black community. In addition to his personal projects, he is also a part of Hampton University's collection of poet's known as The Left Side Poets.
S. Velvet Noose has decided to send one of the tracks from his upcoming mix tape to a few of his favorite blogs/websites with the hopes that it will be shared with their audiences. Noose describes 'The Land of Milk and Honey' as a satirist declaration for the LGBT youth. He draws inspiration from Emily Dickinson's 'I'm A Nobody! Who Are You?' uses the vocals of Joni Mitchell, and a Lady Gaga hook in a track that was produced by J. Dilla. The track is also a part of S. Velvet Noose's touring performance known as The Glam Minstrel Show.
Awesome track.
