There were parts of that that felt more like a Richard Lester film than a De Palma film. Still interesting though.

and then depalma realized there was lots more money in making rip offs of hitchcock movies....
this movie probably only played in nyc, and then for a week.

IMO De Palma's filmography doesn't truly begin until "Sisters" made a year after this movie. I agree this is well-made movie for sure but as a comedy it fails on every level. His thrillers are incredible though. Has anyone seen "Hi, Mom" or "Greetings" or "Murder a la Mod"? I am interested in Depalma's very early films but are they worth seeing?

@GratefulVince: I've seen "Hi, Mom" and "Greetings". I think that "Hi, Mom" - in a way - is the sequel to "Greetings". They are both interesting to watch. Especially for Robert DeNiro performance in the "Greetings". He plays a quiet, nerdy kind of guy who pretends to be a photographer/director in order to talk a girl out of her clothes. He does this off screen - mostly - from behind the camera. "Hi Mom" is much darker than "Greetings", also in matter - somewhat unsettling at times.
