Analysis: Barack Obama has advantage over Hillary Clinton in head-to-head with John McCain Sen. John McCain became the likely Republican nominee after Mitt Romney decided to suspend his campaign Thursday. Now, the Democrats are debating who would do better against the Arizona Republican. Two polls this month have asked registered voters nationwide how they would vote if the choice were between McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton. A CNN poll, conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation February 1-3, shows Clinton three points ahead of McCain, 50 percent to 47 percent. That's within the poll's margin of error of 3 percentage points, meaning that the race is statistically tied.. A Time magazine poll, conducted February 1-4, also shows a dead heat between Clinton and McCain. Each was backed by 46 percent of those polled. In the CNN poll, Obama leads McCain by 8 points, 52 percent to 44 percent. That's outside the margin of error, meaning that Obama has the lead. And in the Time poll, Obama leads McCain by 7 points, 48 percent to 41 percent -- a lead also outside of the poll's margin of error of 3 percentage points. In both polls, Obama looks stronger than Clinton. Why? Obama's explanation: "I think there is no doubt that she has higher negatives than any of the remaining Democratic candidates. That's just a fact, and there are some who will not vote for her." That was three weeks ago. Now, only two Democratic candidates remain. Clinton does have higher negatives than Obama -- and McCain. Forty-four percent of the public say they don't like Clinton, compared with 36 percent who don't like McCain and 31 percent who don't like Obama, according to the CNN poll conducted February 1-3. Why does Obama do better against McCain than Clinton? Obama does do a little better than Clinton with independents and Republicans. But the big difference is men: Men give McCain an 18-point lead over Clinton, 57 percent to 39 percent, according to the CNN poll. But if McCain and Obama went head to head, McCain's lead among men shrinks to three, 49 percent to 46 percent -- statistically a tie. Women, on the other hand, vote for either Clinton or Obama by similar margins. Some Democrats may be worried about how Obama will fare with white voters. Whites give McCain a 15-point lead over Clinton, (56 percent for McCain, 41 percent for Clinton). But Obama actually fares better than Clinton with white voters. McCain still leads, but by a smaller margin, (52 to 43 percent). Obama argues that he can reach across party lines. And he does do a little better than Clinton with Independents and Republicans, at least in these polls. But the big difference is that Clinton doesn't draw very well with men. Obama does. • Hey is that true that Obama promised Jesse Jackson the secretary of state job, and Al Sharpton also a seat in his cabinet along with Louis Farrakhan

I will not vote for him if this is true

  • I'm not sure whether you're serious, but I am:

No! Obama will choose the best people for all those jobs in his government and beyond. Democrats, Republicans or Independents, black, brown, white or grey, man, woman, no children though.

  • You have no idea what republicans really think regarding liberty & independent freedom.

You think republicans only care about money, guns & church because that's what your liberal parents told you.

Liberals surrender their freedoms every time they pass regulation.

Liberals harbor more hatred than any other group.

Maybe it was you that made up the statement that Jesus would be a democrat

Did he tell you that in person?

When does a clump of cells become a soul?

    After pre school?

  • Nice how the vast right wing conspiracy makes things up. Abortion is one of many issues, but there is a vast difference between a child and a fetus. Late term abortion is my opinion is wrong, but clumps of cells and fetuses are in no way children, as they do not have souls.

In any case, if Jesus did choose one of the two parties, it would be Democrat as they see eye to eye on his teachings.

  • I didnt know that Jesus supported a women's right to choose to kill their unborn children.

  • i miss bill clinton

  • Howdey.

Just wondering how you all feel now that Obamas chance of winning is now geting slimmer starting to look so much like 2004 it has to be just a lil scary for ya.

Personaly reguardless of who wins i think we will survive.Just speeking for myself i can disagree with someone and still not hate them so if this is an issue for some of you some day you will realize your only hurting yourself.Altho some of the insaine comments on both sides are comical.

  • I worked on the Hillary Campaign, and (yes) I am voting for Obama, however, Hillary beat McCain in all the polls whereas Obama usually lost 50% of the time. The Right wing destruction of the economy is working to Obama's favor and he may win :) Jesus would vote Democrat anyway !

  • Obama is all smoke and mirrors. I cannot beleive some people think he will lower thier taxes while saving Social Security, Building Universal Healthcare, Expaning Welfare Programs to record levels, Paying for people's College, etc etc.

This is only the tip of the Iceberg. Obam said he doesn't beleive in repairations because they don't go far enough. THE GUY IS A MARXIST PEOPLE!!

  • Because Hillary was born in a Republican family and she is still a Republican, so of course she all friends with them, that's why she is OUT and Obama is in to WIN.

  • Mccain has already passed him in the polls. All of your comments are ignorant. Obama is too far to the left to win. Remember, Obama cant win unless he wins some red states, and he cant. The blue states dont have enough electoral college votes.

  • Mccain is leading in the polls over obama now. So how does your silly question even make sense. mccain in a landslide. I dont even like mccain. But, since Obama beat Hillary, Mccain has gained 13 points in the national polls. The polls dont even include Nader. When Obama spurns Hillary, thats 3 more points. The wheels have come off the Obama campaign.
