In 1863 Irish immigrant, Dick Dowling was in command of 47 memebers of the Davis Guards when the union army attempted to land troops at Sabine Pass on the Texas Louisiana border. Although they were greatly outnumbered, the skillful artillary fire of Dowling's troops surprised and devasted the approaching union gun boats and troop carriers. Dowling's men captured over three hundred union troops and two gun boats in what is considered the most lopsided confederate victory of the cival war. Dowling became known as the "Hero of Sabine Pass."
