蓮花出淤泥而不染 (The lotus appears clean and fresh although being out of the mud
) is a Chinese phrase that refers to a gentleman's virtue and moral even though s/he is in a situation not so morally correct and his heart is still as pure as a white lotus (心淨如蓮). 心 = heart, 淨 = pure or clean, 如 = as, 蓮 = lotus. This philosophy has been deeply applied in Chinese painting.
