If country tended towards the sentimental, Johnny Cash, in both his music and his life, sounded a note of gritty realism. The Grand Ole Opry refused to allow him to perform after his arrest in 1965, so he kicked out their footlights. In his autobiography, he told of how, with "nothing in his blood but amphetamines", he crawled into a cave to die. He survived, and discovered God in the process. By now he had met June Carter from the legendary Carter Family.
In 1961 the Carters went on the road with Johnny Cash. June and Johnny made their professional alliance personal when they married in 1968, after he proposed to her on stage in London, Ontario. She also reinforced his Christian faith, and in later years they often appeared with the evangelist Billy Graham.
