Why Flash 10 Sucks on LiEnucks (Full Explanation): http://bit.ly/136Kib

Quote: "Flash is widely reviled by Linux users, who almost universally disdain its proprietary licensing model, lousy performance, excessive resource consumption, poor platform integration, and abysmal lack of stability. Flash is listed by Mozilla's crash reporting system as the number one cause of Firefox crashes on Linux. On Ubuntu's brainstorm web site—where Ubuntu users suggest ways that the Linux distribution can be improved—over a thousand users have voted for items that highlight the need to fix Flash's dysfunctional behavior and frequent crashes."

Tested on my old laptop, which has the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40 GHz
3 GB of RAM

Operating systems tested:

Linux Mint 10 "Julia" - 64 bit
Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 bit

Flash 10 video tested:
"Desktop Linux Sucks, And What We Can Do About It"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoYL4R3Te2s

Results:

Linux CPU Usage: 40% (Solaris-Mode enabled)
Windows 7 CPU usage: 8%
= Windows 7 is 400% (5x = 5 times) faster than Linux. ;)

Conclusion: Windows 7 by far the better operating system to view Flash 10 video, especially if you have an old CPU/processor.

  • Flash sucks on Linux because of (any combination of) the possibilities below:

    1) Your graphics card sucks.

    2) The Linux port of the video driver for your graphics card sucks.

    3) The Linux port of Adobe Flash sucks.

If you are an experienced Linux user, you know that it is NOT related to the performance of the Linux kernel. It's not the OS's "fault": you must blame the developers of Adobe Flash, 'coz they just don't care about UNIX OSes, they make Flash run smooth on Windows and f*ck the rest.

  • @sampayu

    1) My graphics card does not suck on Windows, the rules the possibility of the hardware sucking out.

    2) watch?v=z5yUuq8wb0U -> This Flash benchmark is 100% CPU bound, it uses no GPU whatsoever, you can test it yourself on Windows (not sure if Linux has a GPU sensor utilities that show GPU usage)

    3) Correct.

But no one's complaining, Adobe just cut out Flash support on Lunix, that's the end.

Who is to blame? Lunix itself. It has a tiny usage share since it's unfriendly and obscure.

  • Well LIEnucks, let's see, you forgot to mention that Flash is hardware-accelerated. You probably tested this on the worst possible hardware configuration, using no accelerated graphics drivers.

Congratulations, Windows can do that too. Just kindly uninstall your graphics driver, open up firefox, open up 35 tabs (an average use number for a power user), and watch a Flash video at HD resolution. You'll get your CPU up there, alright.

  • @amdphreak Someone's in denial?

    watch?v=z5yUuq8wb0U

    1) Graphics drivers installed on Lunix

    2) Windows is better at Adobe's flash.

Everyone with an IQ above 70 knows that.

  • The exception UNIX-architetured OS is the Apple's Mac OS X, 'coz the Apple OS and it's apps are commercial software. Adobe developers make Flash run smoothly on proprietary systems, and just create raw, low-performance ports for Linux. This is their way to discourage people to use free, open-source OSes like Linux, Open Solaris and FreeBSD.

I hope the Linux community creates a clone, better, open-source version of Flash, just like has already happened to many other Windows-based apps.

  • flash suck on Linux that is a fact.

  • flash suck on linux that is a fakt.
