My Tiger Salamander is changing! Day three of metamorphosis. his gills have shrunk down, his fins are being absorbed back into his body, his head has become shorter and wider, his coloration is starting to show, and he is taking more breaths! I have assembled a vivarium, and will get a video of it shortly.

  • Sorry, and when its fully on land for the first time, how big will he be and how long do they live under good care?

  • @MichaelAndJohnny

He will be the same size for a few months, or over a year. I have had my salamander for a year, and he hasn't grown much at all. But it is common for older tiger salamanders to grow up to 8-12 inches long.

Under good care, they can live a good 15-20 years. So if you have one now, prepare for a long time pet! I have even heard stories from people saying theirs lived 28+ years. Pretty amazing for such a small creature :).

  • When it gets older it starts to take on the appearance of a regular tiger salamander right? and when will i have to take it out of water and on to land?

  • @MichaelAndJohnny

Yes, they start to look more like a salamander, and the gills shrink and the fins begin to "dissolve" into the body. When you see your salamander changing, you slowly empty the water over the course of a few days to a week. You also add some above-water land, like safely piled rocks, some floating plastic that the salamander might climb, etc. After the gills are completely gone, or s/he only uses the land, you can move it from the water tank to a vivarium.

  • how long can they stay in the larvae stage? mainly what i'm actually asking is can you permanently keep them at this stage?

  • @xinfeQionx Most of the time, they stay in the larval form for three to five months, but rarely, you find a "larval adult". A fully developed, able to reproduce larva. This is quite rare, but I heard you can force them to do this, by changing the water somehow.
