If a non scientologist is a dumb fuck that doesn't mean scientologists aren't dumb fucks. It takes a special kind of dumb fuck to stick with scientology just like it takes a special kind of dumb fuck to stick to paying psychics to speak with their dead relatives or who think diluting something down a bazillion times does anything more than waste time and water.

One key tactic of a cult is to deny the validity or point out the shortcomings of all other cults, philosophies, etc. Taking over an organization like CAN technically makes perfect sense strategically, but simultaneously exposes them to anyone with a brain. Not sure why this transparency didn't factor into the master plan.
