  • We are given the opportunity to earn class participation marks through out the semester. Begging shouldn't be an option because we are given a lot of time to add comments.

  • "we are given a lot of time to add comments" - yes indeed, thanks for noting that

  • Don't beg - it doesnt feel as good as something that was earned!

To your comment about your marks in undergrad - getting a 78 vs 80. I would be one of those students that wants that mark. We find that there are some professors that may not mark fairly so its hard to get the marks that we feel we deserve. That being said - you have made it easy to get the marks deserved through the use of these participation marks.

  • "some professors that may not mark fairly" - understood, i have been accused of marking too high so people think they can whine to me too easily and i get ppl hating on me later cause i don't give in, it is a tough call

  • I strongly beleive in what you said about getting further post education after receiving an undergraduate. Life experience is more important than just marks but in this case. The big picture is am I learning anything. And even though I am scraping for marks i have learned tons and I am more connected to the online community than I ever be.

  • Thanks Brett - your comments appreciated

  • As per usual, entertaining and informative. Take-aways for me: read the damn paper, contribute to the conversation and don't loose sight of the bigger picture. Needless to say if you're genuinely interested that shouldn't be a problem. Oh yeah... love the sign off prof!

  • As per usual, entertaining and informative. Take-aways for me, read the damn paper, consider the bigger picture, and be consistent with your participation. Simple to say that if you're genuinely interested, it shouldn't be that difficult. Love the sign off too!

  • I think the term “procrastination” becomes one of the most important words that represent how many University students act. Students know that they should work REALLY hard at the beginning of the semester but they just do not notice how time flies without notice. I think University is a place where you should learn to be self-control and self-discipline and they are some important components for one’s value.

  • Hi Prof,

I firmly believe that marks are not everything in life even though people, esp. from my culture, strictly adheres to that component. I think there's a golden mean between book-smart and street-smart which everyone should aim for. No MBA school gives any perfect MBA requirement, they require someone who is well-rounded.

  • I like your honest view of the practicality of post-secondary education, it's honestly better to pursue further education when your mind is matured and understands the application of the theory learned in class, expecially in university since it is not very hands-on.

In terms of class participation marks, what you said in class this week pretty much explans it, usually the people that get the higher participation marks are the ones that deserve it, by contributing in class.
