HIV-AIDS A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN THE HAITIAN COMMUNITY IN NY. ALMOST 7 OUT OF 10 (69%) HAITIANS LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN NYC LIVE IN BROOKLYN. THANKS TO ELSIE GUYBERT FROM (EMG) AND DIASPORA COMMUNITY SERVICES.
HIV is a very seriousl problem in NY. Everyone who is sexually active should get a screen, and if positive, go for diagnostic testing.
Screens do NOT mean you have HIV. They mean you COULD have HIV. They are used so that people can quickly and inexpensively rule out HIV infection (the vast majority) and then allow people who MAY be infected to go for the diagnostic tests (which are more expensive and take much more time).
HIV tests are neither truly "positive" or "negative," they are only shades of "reactive." The test result is "interpreted" for "risk group," so that if you're brown-skinned, gay, a drug user, or African, you are both more likely to be tested, and more likely to have your test result re-tested, until you're given a result of either "true positive" or "false negative."
You have a right to know the limits of testing. To accept or refuse, is your choice. Visit help for hiv dot com
