Mountain pine beetle attacks have decimated BCs pine forests, seriously damaging their ability to store carbon and protect against global warming. An effective response to the beetle attacks will involve much more than just clearcutting dead trees.

  • Good try, Pine beetle my ass excuse for loggers to move into old growth forest log and turn into planation. As in Tasmania, Swedan and the USA. These beetles are natures way of openning forest for new growth the dead trees are used by the new trees.

  • Would planting western red cedar be possible in the same areas as pine? Red cedar has a high natural resistance to decay so it would continue to hold carbon even after death. Mature trees have a natural fungicide that would prevent the spread of blue stain fungi by the pine beetle.
