I am a big fan of the AVGN, but I respectfully disagree with his scathing review of Castlevania II.
Then again, I hear that he later admitted that he had exaggerated, and he liked Simon's Quest just fine.

Indeed this is true. I just got the DVD in my mail yesterday. Simon's Quest is a true classic also, I think. I have to admit, finding Dracula was a pain in the ass. So many rumours how to find him ;)
