i dont know what to say to you if you've had a bluescreen in tyool 2011

I would choose KDE over Gnome 3 or Unity.

@bartjayburroughs I see the appeal of course, but even with Ubuntu there will be more of a learning curve than with XP > 7; just an example: I currently have had VIsta for a few months and have been meaning to get W7 back on my computer but when you have spare time you don't really feel like installing an OS. Even less so if you have to install it and then spend a good while getting acquainted with it to the point of not feeling limited - like you do with Linux.

if i could easily bypass gameguard on wine to play the games i like playing on windows, id be only a linux user

Who need Win7>?
Well, I do :) because i play games and use Cubase 5!
Having said that... my main OS is good-ole-slackware64
-
good, in my debian is main OS so, i cant go back now :P becouse i will be feel more complicate it.

@SayaYunani which i used when i was looking for places i had used "getElementsByClassName" in a project i was working on to replace with "querySelectorAll" because ie sucks balls. (which also was easier in kwrite because i could use regex and replace 'getElementsByClassName("[^"]*
")' with 'querySelectorAll("\1")' that replacement across 14 different source files would have taken a long time with wordpad or notepad in windows. linux FTW
-
@SayaYunani so, i brought up my console and put in "grep -i [function name] *.cpp" and it didnt find it so i went up a level and put it in, nothing put in "grep -i [function name] */*.cpp" few more references to it. put in that same one at a higher level, found the function definition. with windows i would have had to pore over all the source files til i found it (ive recently learned that "grep -i [function name] -R" would have worked too.
-
@SayaYunani yeah, i didnt know when i got it that i got one of the hardest to learn linux out there. but even still i dont think i would ever switch. i love my debian, once you've figured it out there is just about nothing you cant do.
an interesting anecdote for linux in general. a while back i was looking over the source code for php and i came across a function and i wanted to find where it was defined. now php has a LOT of source files and i didnt want to go over them one at a time (cont)
I'm not much of a gamer but I know that using programs like bordeaux, crossover games or cedega (commercial versions of wine) or playonlinux (free version with an easy gui for installing and managing windows programs) you can install most steam games. you may want to check some of those out if you want to try ubuntu.

Two words : Customer service
Something most people want because most people can't handle linux

Customer Service?? Unless you are a huge corporate client don't expect any of this from M$, best buy maybe but not Microsoft. "Most" people haven't tried anything else because they are too lazy to learn anything new even if it is better, faster, more secure and free. I have switched 8 people from XP to linux in the last year and they handle it just fine so on that we disagree. But, I am glad you are happy with what you have.
