"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty." -- such wise words. Sixty years ago, Charlie Chaplin and Langston Hughes weren't "traitors"; neither are the Tea Party folks today, and neither were the Iraq War protesters in 2003. The United States was founded on dissent, and dissent is almost always patriotic.

Paley offered Murrow the opportunity to produce hour-long "special" editions of "SEE IT NOW" for the 1955-'56 season, and Murrow reluctatntly agreed. That was the beginning of the end of the program- it eventually settled onto Sunday afternoons at 5pm(et) from 1956 through '58. It was cancelled because Paley couldn't sell the time, and he, too, was irritated at the "trouble" it was causing {he told Murrow, "I don't want this constant stomach ache every time you do a controversial subject"}.

It certainly ruined "SEE IT NOW" as a weekly series. Its sponsor, Alcoa, decided that Murrow was stirring up too many issues for them to be comfortable sustaining the program, and dropped it in the summer of 1955. At the same time, Bill Paley, "Mr. CBS", wanted Murrow's Tuesday at 10:30pm(et) time slot for a more profitable show to follow "THE $64,000 QUESTION" [Murrow saw the beginning of it on a monitor, and asked Fred Friendly, "Any bets on how long we'll keep this time period now?"].

This was the last two minutes of that "SEE IT NOW" telecast. In New York, Don Hollenbeck followed the program at 11pm, anchoring WCBS-TV's late local newscast. He said at the beginning of the newscast, "I don't know if you've seen the show that was on before, but I want to associate myself with what Ed Murrow has just said, and say I have never been prouder of CBS." That earned him the beginning of an attack from conservative TV columnist Jack O'Brian of the New York Journal-American....

...for two months, O'Brian kept wondering, in his column, why such a "pinko" like Hollenbeck was working for CBS. He never let up....and Hollenbeck was shattered by the attacks {his wife leaving him didn't help}. He finally commited suicide on June 22, 1954 [he turned on the gas, and shut his apartment windows]. O'Brian never regretted his jaded opinion of Hollenbeck- and died in obscurity on November 5, 2000.

From major TV networks to small town newspapers, advertising (and the fear of losing it), has ruined journalism.

Like McCarthy hated commies - then he must have been a Nazi and probably a creationist too!

It's often a waste of time and effort even presenting facts to minds which prefer to ignore any truths inconvenient to their positions on issues. Throwing insults without any attempt to address the responses is the first refuge of people who can't make an informed and rational case for their beliefs.
