I am so glad you are incorporating breast self exams in your life. Most cancers are found this way. Because the lump is movable this makes us a little less worried. At your age, you will have a breast consisting of fibrous tissue. Fibrous tissue can cause the breast to feel lumpy and bumpy. You did exactly the right thing by contacting your provider and having it checked. It is a scary process for women but the key is detecting it early. We wish you the all the best. How young should women start to get mammograms? It seems that self exams do little to reassure me because my breast tissue feels very different and always quite lumpy during different times of the month.

From Dawn McCarty Jamestown Hospital RT R M
Women between the ages of 35-40 should have a baseline mammogram
Between the ages of 40-50--every year or every other year depending on patients risk
After age 50, every year.
Breast self-exam is important so patients know how their breasts normally feel at differnet times of the month. If there is a change, note it and compare to the previous month. Many cancers are found this way.

This is a very good vdeo. I have gone every year since age 39 when I developed a benign cyst. i have always had them done at the same hospital - in my case the Cleveland Clinic where I worked for almost 42 yrs. Mammograms have developed over those years upto the current digital version. When they switched to digital there was a lot of comparisons with the old readings anda lot of rechecking. Did I enjoy the "rechecks"-heck no! - but if the can find something it's worth it. DO IT LADIES!
