(as explained in the lyrics.True John Baldry saved his life.BUT he is talking about his career life as a singer / songwriter, ( by talking him into NOT giving up his music career John saved him). @Artifactman1 ..that song makes me sad....but also happy that Elton is still around and making music! He was going to kill himself and called his friend John Baldry who went to him and literally saved Elton's life! This song was written about that very low period of his life and in tribute to Baldry. Elton took the name 'John' from his friend 'Long John Baldry.'
