I found out I had thyroid cancer and on 9/3/09 had a total thyroid removal. I've been on the low iodine diet for 3 weeks now and I go in for my therapy dose of I-131 tomorrow.

  • what were your symptoms prior to being diagnosed?

  • @nightgangl7 actually i didn't have any symptoms that i was aware of at the time. i went for a scan to see why my lymph glands were swollen and they found a nodule on my thyroid. it was small and the thyroid dr almost dismissed it, but decided to biopsy it anyway. i believe most people find a nodule on their thyroid. i did have trouble swallowing sometimes.

  • i have the opposite problem of anemia- i have high hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, which can be dangerous.

  • I am getting ready to go in for thyroid surgery on Jan. 13th, they are going to be removing my entire thyroid as well. I am using an ENT surgeon as well, my mother had hers removed about 2 years ago by a general surgeon and she has partially paralyzed vocal cords. I am very nervous about this surgery and the after affects, I keep watching all these videos on here of people that have been through it and it really does help. I plan to record a video soon myself. Thank you for you post.

  • let me know how it goes. i still can't sing high notes but i am hoping that the muscles recover after i work on it. i am doing well. i don't like how emotional i feel now as compared to how i was before the TT removal. but otherwise i am doing well and i hope you are ok too! i went into surgery reading my favorite Bible verses for strength and peace. hope to hear from you soon. teresa

  • @teresarieke Hi Teresa, are you able to sing high notes now, after a year? A friedn told me that after 15 years she cant get high notes and her voice is deeper. i had a total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago and i'm concerned about that. thank you

  • @scouseland1 i am sure that every person has a different story. it is true that it affected my voice, but mostly because there must have been some muscle damage. right after surgery it was very hard to swallow, but it has gotten better. hope you feel better.

  • This helped by telling us to go to a specialist instead of a general surgeon. That's really an important suggestion. Nice to know what one might expect afterwards, like numbness and swelling inside but you seem okay and look well. Hope all is well with you now, 2 yrs. later.

  • what was wrong with your blood that caused you to see a specialist? If i am ask?

  • I want to know how long after you were diagnosed did you have surgery?

I am waiting for my surgeon to schedule mine and it's been almost a month.
