There is an ocean of complaints about this blender in the review section of the Walmart site. I found a way to get it open without tools. The trick is that the blender MUST be plugged in. You need two persons.
Person 1: hold the base in place with both hands.
Person 2: push DOWN on the cup (blender activates), then rotate RIGHT.
Force it hard a few times and it will budge. Something about activating the blender makes it lose enough to open it. Otherwise it's nigh impossible.
