I heard Justin say in an interview that his father taught him you should never try writing a song about something unless you have real ownership over the subject, having experienced it yourself. He has a great voice and guitar playing style, but what makes his songs go from great to classic is the incredibly palpable genuineness and honesty in his songwriting. He sings and writes what he knows, and it is clear that he is not posing.
