Did you replace the head gasket? There is a tricky thing with the '78 where a port on the head doesn't line up with one of the other gaskets supplied in the head gasket kit. It's been many years but I remember that it let coolant into the cumbustion chamber.
This high temp reading surely looks like trapped air in the cooling system. Bleed it according to the workshop manual procedure and it will return to normal, usually in the middle of the indicator. By the way, check also the operation of the electric cooling fan behind the radiator(less probable due to the rapid needle climbing)and the water pump/alternator belt. Enjoy your x1/9!
you need to put the car on axle stands at the rear then open the bleed valve in top left of radiator, and bleed (allen wrench)rev car in short bursts ,you have an airlock, this happened to me on my x19 and 308,ps open block tap first too bleed block then close
are you sure the liquid coming out of the exhaust isn't just condensation? THat's what it looks like to me. Plus, if you have an air bubble in the system, the tank may not get hot because water isn't cycling through it.. Otherwise, nice car! :)

nice car. i had a silver and brown 1985 Bertone x1/9 about 1996-97. I prefer the early models like yours with the original compact bumpers.
