In the Odhner type calculators you can operate from right to left or from left to right. In a multiplication you can substract in order to reduce crank turns: its easier to multiply by 200 and substract 3(five turns) than multiply by 197(seventeen crank turns). This doesn't work just so in the early models with no tens transmission, like HifiCentret says.
