Taken in May 2007 at Zagan in Poland. In 1944 it was Sagan in Germany, Stalag Luft III, one of several Prisoner of War camps for captured Allied airmen. Here occurred "The Great Escape" of 76 officers through the tunnel called 'Harry'. 50 escapers were murdered on Hitler's orders. The video shows Dick's tunnel start and line. See my website www.robdavis.webhop.org/gt_esc for the full details of the Great Escape.

  • "George" is rarely mentioned, although identified on various plans of the camp. Yes an exavation would be a good idea.

  • heheh DICK

  • @jpjonesy do you remember the name of the documentary?

  • The George Tunnel is well documented in the book titled "Kriegie" by Kenneth W. Simmons. I recently bought a copy off e-Bay. George was built from the Center Compound of Stalag Luft III, Barracks 149, room/block 1. The vertical shaft was under the stove. Yes, it was devised as a emergency route if the Nazi's were ordered to kill everyone.

  • Saw the documentary where they excavated the area where Tunnel Dick was. Wish I could contact the people who did that excavation, because the theatre area should have been excavated to find Tunnel George. George was never used, and was reportedly sealed by the prisoners in case a "blitz out" was needed. Trolleys, digging materials, wires, air pump, etc. all sealed below. I know that to find anything intact is an impossibility. However, an excavation could prove enlightening. Use ground sensors.

  • Haven't knew where's the Dick tunnel though I had been to Stalag Luft III plenty of time. Thanks for the video [=.

  • I remember that documentary on PBS... The nazis never found tunnel Dick, it was used in the end to hide documents, and other items. They discovered Tom under a small stove and the POWs escaped through Harry.
