  • In the horizontal case, the second 1000 gram mass does the job of the hook in the vertical case.

A spring scale only measures the tension in the spring. The spring applies a force equal to the weight of the 1000 gram mass to hold it steady. This is the only mass that is measured.

The second 1000 gram mass holds the spring steady. Since the second 1000 gram mass is not attached to the spring, it is not measured.

  • "...and then I cover it over as I like to say to my students - so that evil eyes do not see it"

    LOL WTF LOL!!

  • Imagine... Instead of these stupid shows like Jersey Shore, They had a show like this.

  • He's a little fast, but I get his point once he does it on the board.

  • Prof. Miller is my kind of teacher . So sad most teachers these days can't hold a candle to him.

  • Only on the Moon could you put Newtons law to the test. and they did and the ball and the Feather and they bolth hit the Moon at the same time and Ah Hah Newton was right.

  • the reason he is so great, is because he loves what he does. i wish i had such an enthusiastic physics teacher. i just learned more than i did in the entire year from about four of his videos :]

  • I remember watching Prof. Miller on PBS when I was young. I could not wait for The Electric Company to be over as his show followed TEC! It is amazing how I remember his experiments and lectures; too bad we can't get a man like Prof. Miller in each elementary school! He captivated all our minds and taught us well! Thanks for the memories.

  • woooooow great teaching i love you sir your awesome..

  • Science is the best lesson =)

  • In the horizontal spring scale.. It isn't surprising after a little thought. When measuring on a vertical line with the scale hanging from the beam, the beam is attatched to the building which weighs thousands of times the weight but it is not measured as that side of the scale is the point of reference and the spring side is the measuring the relative difference i.e. F = ma + mg. It's all relative baby. Now I must go and pluck out my evil eyes.........

  • Wonderful person and teacher. A simpler time and hope students today can appreciate this as much as I did.
