Israel mulls building nuclear power plant

Israel's Ministry of National Infrastructure has commissioned an external body to conduct a feasibility study for the building of a nuclear power plant.

The study will examine plans for Israel's Electric Corporation to construct a nuclear power plant in southern Israel, that will provide 1,200 megawatts constituting 10 percent of the corporation's mass production.

It will also focus on declaring the area where the plant will be constructed ex-territorial, an area over which Israel hold no sovereignty.

This would allow Israel to sidestep issues concerning its refusal to sign international nuclear treaties subject to the scrutiny of international observers.

Last March Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told the American network CNN he favored building a nuclear reactor in Israel.

FIrst of all, Netanyahu has said that in the wake of the nuclear plant disaster in Japan, he is shelving the idea of a nuclear power plant, and Israel will rely on the offshore natural gas fields that hopefully will begin to supply Israel sometime in 2013. Israel had relied on Egyptian natural gas, but those pipelines have been blown up 6 times since Mubarak was removed. And Israel cannot buy reactors from abroad because it is not a signatory to the NPT. It would have to build it indigenously.

Its not wise constructing a 1200MW nuclear power plant now - better wait for GEH to complete their 1200MW 4th generation S-PRISM power plant. Then we can buy one from them and gain a 4th generation safe plant.
