Congressman Jack Kingston on WTOC's The News at 5 discussing the Army's decision to strip Fort Stewart of a much anticipated 5th Brigade Combat Team (BCT). The BCT was to come to the post as a result of the 2005 BRAC process but, in cutting the military budget, Secretary Gates decided to reduce the Army's planned growth from 48 to 45 brigades. The announcement not only delivers an emotional blow to a community which stands strongly behind its post but a severe economic blow as well. Area residents estimate total economic investment in preparation for the new brigade at over $400 million - investments made on the assurances of their government.
