You can't put a Spear-wielding character in the back or else that character will be of no use in melee combat.

Once you get Minwu, level up your spells to 6 or higher and battle the soldiers here. Use Minwu's Cure and Revive spells to heal the party while you defeat the soldiers with your spells. Sometimes they will drop Flame Bows, which are kick-ass.
