Limón, also known as Puerto Limón, is the capital city of the homonymous province of Costa Rica. It is that country's main Caribbean port, and has a population of around 105,000 (including many neighboring small cities). The city, and the province in general, is home to most of Costa Rica's citizens of African descent. Originally from Jamaica, these workers were brought to the area in the late 19th century to build the railroad line from San José to Limón. The train boosted the country's banana exports and economy in general. By the time the line was closed, the city was the country's primary harbor
Cahuita National Park is a National Park in the Caribbean La Amistad Conservation Area of Costa Rica located on the southern Caribbean coast in Limón Province, connected to the town of Cahuita. It protects beaches and lowlands and attracts tourists and other visitors who are able to scuba dive and snorkel in the protected marine area which contains the Coralline Reefs, as well as being a nesting ground for sea turtles.
The reef is known to have at least 35 species of coral, 140 species of molluscs, 44 species of crustaceans, and 123 species of fish. On land there are many types of animal as well including tamanduas, pacas, coatis, raccoons, sloths, agoutis, howler and capuchin monkeys. It has a variety of birds as well including the green ibis, rufous kingfisher and keel-billed toucans.

  • Agreed. Everyone told me continuously that my camera and mp3 player would get stolen in S America. Not once. It's called looking after yourself and your possessions; be aware, not paranoid.

  • costa rica is a very beautiful country, i love the jamaican roots that are in Limon

  • It's amazing how little the park has changed in four years! I was just here a few weeks ago!

  • @summerraen - I agree. When I stayed in Limon, some European tourists did get their equipment stolen...but they left it unguarded. I've been to CR twice and have never had anything but positive experience. Caution is necessary EVERYWHERE. Love CR. Going to go back again next year.
