The mosquito-borne disease malaria kills more than one million people each year — most of them in sub-Saharan Africa. This short video discusses the prevalence of malaria in Africa, and new hopes to fight the disease following successful early trials of a malaria vaccine that could potentially save millions of lives.
The sad reality is that we have a way to completely eradicate malaria. Most people have forgotten that malaria was once prevalent in the Southern United States and Mediterranean Europe. We used DDT in these places, and malaria is completely gone! Oh, yeah, then we banned it because we were done with it. I would recommend reading "The Excellent Powder: DDT's Political and Scientific History" as a refresher course on a how we can eliminate malaria today.
