A movie poster is the most common printed advertisement for an upcoming movie. Whether you realize it or not, you see these posters, along with similar ads, everywhere you go. 

A movie poster has a very defined shape. It is typically 27 inches wide and 40 or 41 inches long. Rarely does it break this measurement, because movie theaters have built-in frames that can form to this width and length. The great thing about movie posters and movie advertising in general is that it is an art form in and of itself. If done well, it can spark an emotional response that can range in anything from fear to love to excitement. Most importantly, it develops interest in the movie that is coming out.

Like so many independent filmmakers, it will be your job to create this poster and make something that is compelling and captures a person's eye. You want it to be unique and stand out. Most of all, you will want this poster to make the person want to see your movie.

In the tutorials that follow this course, Justin will be creating a previously-conceived poster, and he will be going through the elaborate steps in Photoshop CS5.

To begin, the next tutorial in this course deals with the theory of a movie poster's design. Since there are so many designs out there, the focus will be on a relatively famous one that uses common elements found in many posters.
