Terry Riley's "In C" (2011 Rite of Summer music festival) -Part 1

Terry Riley's "In C ". A free performance organized by Pam Goldberg and Blair McMillen, artistic directors of 2011 Rite of Summer Music Festival. Terry Riley's Minimalist milestone from 1964 was played by roughly 40 players from some of New York's most industrious new-music ensembles.
"The aesthetic behind the piece bespeaks simplicity, collective openmindness, and groove-oriented celebration. In C can be played on any instruments, and by any number of instruments.There is no set duration to In C. As for the notes themselves, the score of In C consists of 53 short musical phrases, which are anywhere from half a beat to 32 beats long. Musicians move from phrase to phrase by a sort of unspoken collective will. Each phrase can be repeated an arbitrary number of times. Players are asked to stay within two to three phrases of each other, but they are encouraged to start the phrases at different places/on different beats. Phrases are played in order, although some may be skipped, a decision that is left up to the performer.
The sound of In C becomes a hypnotic and dance-like mixture of pulse, harmony, note clusters, and undulating walls of sound. But one of the most intriguing things about the piece is that, amidst this hypnotic and joyous pulse, In C unfolds and evolves differently at every performance"-Blair McMillen
