A little video and a few pictures from a recent morning visit to Cathedral Bay Heritage Preserve. This protected Carolina Bay is full of pond cypress. The water was only about ankle deep as I waded through this area. Some of the trees show evidence of logging in the past but many of the trees appear to be very old. Carolina bays are interesting to me...I have noticed in my area that only Pond Cypress grow in the bays. All the Bald Cypress are on the rivers and the lakes formed along the rivers. I wonder why this is? I hope you enjoy these pictures.
My first guess would be that they have outcompeted the bald cypress for the conditions found in Bays? But I assume that both species can grow at the same rates and in the same conditions. Second, perhaps the bald cypress were logged out of existence long ago from the bays? Third, Bays were left over from the last ice age receding. Can't warp my head around how pond cypress would wind up there alone without bald cypress.
Great question and I love thinking about it!
