Light Rail in Ottawa (3). Part Three. MacKenzie King Bridge stations.

These series of videos explain how it is both feasible and cost effective to build and operate a Rapid Transit Light Rail system on surface streets through downtown Ottawa.

David Jeanes (P. Eng), President of Transport 2000 demonstrates (via maps of downtown Ottawa and scale model cut-outs of 4-car Light Rail vehicles) how stations can be placed on many sections of Slater and Albert Streets as well as on the McKenzie King Bridge through to the University of Ottawa. There are three videos in this series. Made by Friends of the O Train. April 2009. Ottawa, Canada.

  • Friends of the O Train and Transport 2000 and others have been actively promoting the use of existing rails and former rail corridors for commuter based rail services throughout eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

That is how the O Train got started in the first place.

These videos show that 4 car articulated trains can carry a significant amount of people and it can be implemented quickly.

  • In the future we would use Existing rails as well as adding new rail lines in existing corridors i.e. hydro and parkland. A rail corridor does not need to be very wide. These old and new corridors can bring in people VERY fast from the suburbs to the core of the city.

And remember, not everyone works in the core. Many people also work in the many industrial parks around the region where most have rail lines near them.

The downtown streets are already over capacity with buses!

  • Using existing rail lines also means that riders from Kanata would ride due east, then north, where bus lines go north east, a more direct line and there are no useful lines from Orleans to the core. Volume is not the only concern, travel time is a key factor in making transit systems viable.

  • What you're forgetting is that the National Captial Commision destroyed all the tracks in down town Ottawa. That's the city is also called Autowa. Though the place need commuter & regional trains too.

  • Turning the current transitway into a light rail line is a no brainer, along with bringing back trains to Union Station in down town.

  • Scrap the project and use the existing tracks that are spanning Ottawa from west to east.

Miami has Tri-Rail, NYC has Metro North, Boston has MBTA, San Diego has Sounder. L.A. has Metrolink. Phoenix has The Roadrunner, Toronto has GO Transit, Montreal has AMT.

What do all these commuter agencies have in common? They all use existing railway tracks and North American equipment.

Stop repeating the Greber syndrome. Light Rail is total waste of Ottawa taxpayers money.
