Here is how sodium metal acts when it comes into contact with water.When you put sodium metal into water it releases hydrogen and turns the water into acid. Sulfuric acid. In this video long after the sodium metal was gone the water in the Aluminum pot was still working(though it was very very weak) against the metal. Be very careful working with both the sodium metal and the water that is left over.

  • Both of you are correct. I am working with acids here at home and I got the 2 confused. Good catch. I wondered when someone would catch it for me. Thank you both.

  • It turns the water basic, not acidic. You need to correct this video's caption to say "it turns the water into base."

  • It must of taken a couple seconds or so for the mineral oil to come off. Very neat, but like you said in one of your other videos...scary stuff, very reactive. I wonder if it would react faster if the pot was grounded to the ground. A lot of free electrons there. Nice video.

  • you rock DAD:)love your son michael

  • right, but could it also be Na+HOH->NaOH+1/2H2?

  • you also need to practice proper safety skills. you should not touch the sodium with your bare hands because there is a risk of moisture on your hands. it couldve exploded while you were holding it.

  • there ist failed a 2

  • Actually, its 2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2 you gota balance that equation. :)

  • Na+HOH->NaOH+H2

  • Ok i am just going to change some of your information that you have said. Sodium + Water = Sodium Hydroxide. Their is no way it can give you sulfuric acid because sulfuric acid is a Sulfur ,oxygen and Hydrogen compound and your reaction does not consist of Sulfur. change the topic and information because its Sodium hydroxide. Check some of my videos if your interested in chemistry.
