This is Ames' idea of "Beautiful, Charming, and Brilliant". When he was about to reiterate to his mom that he saw her in all different situations and he thought she was beautiful (day or night, land or sea ) and she mistakenly thought he was talking about how she carried herself, Ame reluctantly said she handled herself very well. He looked like his mind wandered to the times she didn't and he found it hard to lie to his mother. Thankfully Ashley was too superficial and insecure to choose him.
